WSQ Advanced Certificate in Early Years


  1. Provide educarers with an overview of the history and theories behind early childhood care and education, as well as an understanding of the various domains and stages of development for children from birth to 3 years. These must be portrayed in the context of the work experience of local educarers to help them reflect, assess and improve their current practices.
  2. Enable educarers to have a more in-depth understanding of the guiding principles, outcomes and sub-outcomes of the Early Years Development Framework (EYDF).
  3. Enable educarers to apply and implement the suggested practices stated in the EYDF in their work with young children and families.
  4. Equip educarers with necessary skills and practical knowledge to plan and implement programmes, curriculum and environments for the following age groups:
    • Infants (2 to 18 months)
    • Toddlers (Above 18 to 30 months)
    • Nursery children (Above 30 to 36 months)
  5. Equip educarers with the skills to engage in reflective practice.
  6. Equip educarers with relevant skills to work collaboratively with colleagues, parents and families, as well as key stakeholders in the community to support children’s care, learning and development.

Structure

The part-time (day) and part-time (night) course duration are 8 months and 14 months respectively. Students are also required to complete 399 classroom hours and 201 practicum hours.

NOTE: 
For part time courses (night), students are strongly encouraged to satisfy a Minimum Service Period ("MSP") of 6 month by working in the Early Childhood Sector upon course completion.

Note: Applicants for the Place-and-Train mode must be employed by an ECDA-licensed childcare centre as trainee teachers for no longer than 6 months from course registration date.

Assessment

A range of assessment tasks will be utilized that relate to the diverse individual and team-based conceptual and problem solving tasks typically encountered in the pre-school environment. All modules will be assessed throughout the duration of the course. Each module requires either a written examination and/or a classroom assignment (individual and/or group).

Candidates must score at least 50% in each area of assessment to successfully complete the course. If a candidate fails in any module, he/she is allowed one supplementary examination. After which, the candidate is expected to repeat the module.

Part-time (night) students will have to find their own practicum centres (at registered childcare centres) when they have received the letter of acceptance from SEED Institute.

Applicants can try approaching the principals/supervisors to seek approval in doing practicum at their centres. Please note that practicum cannot be done in Playgroup, enrichment centres, tuition centres and international schools.

Entry Requirement

Based on the Early Childhood Training Accreditation Committee (ECTAC) accreditation standards with effect from 1 May 2016, applicants must be:  

  • At least successfully completed Secondary 4 education or completed 10 years of formal education AND
  • At least average SOA 5 in the WPL series, including SOA 5 for WPL (Written) *

* This only applies to applicants who do not possess a credit in GCE 'O' level EL1 or acceptable alternatives .

From 1 April 2017, child care centres participating in the Place-and-Train mode (Part-Time (Day) intakes only) will receive Salary Support of the following:
  • 70% of monthly salary, capped at $4,000 per eligible trainee (Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents) per month for up to 8 months.

Self-sponsored applicants who are NTUC members enjoy UTAP funding of up to 50% claim on unfunded programme fee capped at $250 per year. Prevailing terms & conditions apply.
