Certificate in Infant/Toddler Care and Development (English / Chinese)

Course Description

The Certificate in Infant/Toddler Care and Development course is designed to help staff working with infants and toddlers acquire the relevant knowledge and skills that are required for the operation of infant and toddler care programme in line with the licensing requirements and standards set by MCYS. 

 

Objectives

  • Equip edu-carers with a clear understanding of the developmental milestones and emerging skills in the first three years. 
  • Ensure that edu-carers working with infants and toddlers acquire the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge and skills systematically as needed to perform their roles and responsibilities as infant and toddler edu-carers. 
  • Enable edu-carers to be responsible for planning and facilitating a holistic curriculum for infants and toddlers.
     

Structure

The course will be offered with and without exemptions. The course with exemptions comprises 75 classroom hours and a 30-hour practicum. The course without exemptions comprises 100 classroom hours and a 60-hour practicum. 

 

Course Content

  • Module 1: Principles of Infant and Toddler Development
  • Module 2a: Roles and Practices of an Educarer 
  • Module 2b: Safety, Health and Nutrition Practices
  • Module 3: Environmental Design for Infant/Toddler Programmes 
  • Module 4: Infant/Toddler Curriculum 
  • Module 5: Working with Families 
  • Practicum (Please note that Students are expected to look for an Infant Centre or Childcare centre that is licensed under MCYS for their practicum attachment)

The practicum attachment is a compulsory requirement in order to pass the course.
 
 

Assessment

Assessment will be based on students' performance in projects and assignments, and the practicum. 


 

Admission Requirements

Minimum age: 21 years old and above

 

Without Exemptions

  • Basic ECE certification; OR

  • State Registered Nurse; OR

  • Minimum 3 GCE 'O' levels with credit in English as First Language* (for english course) OR Minimum 3 GCE 'O' levels with credit in Chinese* (for chinese course);
     
    *For English course; If applicant does not have a credit in EL1, a minimum band 5.5 obtained in IELTS (General) will be acceptable.
     
    *For Chinese course; *If applicant does not have a credit in CL, a minimum Advanced level grade C (level 9) obtained in Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) will be acceptable.


With Exemptions

  • Early Childhood Teacher Bridging Programme (ECTBP); OR
  • Certificate in Pre-school Teaching or equivalent certificates (CPT); OR
  • Diploma in Preschool Education - Teaching (DPE-T) or equivalent
